This is my transcription of pages 445-454 of Roster of the Confederate Soldiers of Georgia, 1861-1865, Vol. 6, Lillian Henderson, editor, 1959-1964. Known errors are not corrected here.

SPALDING AND NEIGHBORING COUNTIES

This company was organized in December 1862, and served throughout the  war.  The 63rd Regiment was initially assigned to the Department of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, and defended the GA and SC coasts in the vicinity of Savannah, GA  Around the middle of May 1864, the 63rd Regiment joined the Army of Tennessee until Gen. Johnston surrendered at Durham, NC.

Taken  prisoner at Fort Donaldson, Dover, TN, Feb. 16, 1862, and sent to Camp Chase Prison, Ohio, and then to Johnson's Island, Ohio.  Exchanged, Sept. 1862, and appointed drillmaster at Thunderbolt Battery, Savannah, GA.  Appointed 2d Lieutenant in Field and Staff of the 63rd Regt. GA Infantry.  Assigned to duty in Company G, Jan. 27, 1864.  Pension record states that he joined Company I, 63rd Regt. GA Infantry. late in 1862.  Born in GA.

Elected Jr. 2d Lieutenant Mar. 1, 1863.

Captured near Jonesboro, GA, Sept. 5, 1864, and sent to Johnson's Island, Ohio.  Requested permission to take the oath of allegiance, claiming to have been loyal to the Union and to have been conscripted into Confederate service and to have deserted to the enemy at the first opportunity to avail himself of the amnesty proclamation.  Released after taking the oath of allegiance, May 12, 1865.  Born in 1830 or 1831.
